Edison Memorial Lecture on 11th Feb, 2008

11th of February is no ordinary day for engineers. It marks the birthday of a great scientist as well as an entrepreneur who made such great contributions to the domain of engineering that the whole world would acknowledge some of its best comforts to him. No other than Thomas Alva Edison was born on 11th February 1847 and to express its gratitude to him, IEEE Student Branch of NIT Warangal organized the first 'Edison Memorial Lecture' in NIT campus. The lecture was based on ' Transient Over voltage protection ' and 'Control of Harmonics' and was delivered by Mr. C. Satish who is the Chairman of Industrial Application Society. He has done lot of work in his field and received many prestigious awards like IEEE RAB Innovation Award, IEEE IAS Petrochemical and Chemical Industry Electrical Safety Excellence Award, IAS Distinguished Service Award etc. The event was attended by some of the eminent personalities of IEEE Hyderabad Section including Chairperson,M.B. Srinivas, Student Activity Chair, Nookala Srinivas and few more. From NIT Warangal, guests like Director In-charge G.V. Reddy, Dean (Students Affairs), J.Ramachander Rao , faculty of various departments graced the occasion. IEEE student members from different colleges in and around Warangal like Vaag Devi College of Engineering, SR Engineering College, Jayamukhi College of Engineering etc. were present during the
event too. The evening started with the Chairperson, IEEE Hyderabad Section, M.B.
Srinivas's address to the students and citation of the history of IEEE Student Branch NIT Warangal. The lecture on Transient Over voltage Protection by Mr. C.Satish was really enlightening and covered the topic with lucidity. During the talk, he explained basic concepts of surge protection, deployment of protectors, protector specifications and a short session on control of harmonics. The lecture concluded with some doubts and queries from students and faculty. After the lecture, the evening ended with an address by Student Activity Chair, IEEE Hyderabad Section, Dr. Nookala Srinivas, in which he gave the details about the forthcoming International Conference TENCON' 08 to be hosted by the Hyderabad Section and invited applications for volunteers to assist during the event.

The special interest group discussions and the student lectures initiated at the student branch has brought like minded people in the student community to work together. The Student branch at NIT Warangal is all set for an action. Truly a miracle and its much exciting to see that its happening. The tradition of the branch reflects the attitude of the student members. Luckily every year we had the hard working & energetic team that proactively took over responsibilities and retained the glory. In the years to come we will see a new environment to nuture the different skillset in each individual students, the dream happens but not without a toil !!.. We are posed with challenges at every step and a glory with every rise..

The IEEE student branch of NIT Warangal is one of the oldest branches of IEEE in the country. I would like to narrate a true incident below:
Being a hardcore fan of Open Source softwares and hardwares, I was very much interested in bringing opensource to the students of the college but it was very difficult for me to do so alone. One of my friends, Prasanna the present chairperson of the branch introduced me to the counsellor and together we have been able to spread the news of open source not only among the students of the college but also among the students outside the college(ie. the rest of Andhra Pradesh and some from outside as well). Similarly the student branch appreciates new ideas from other students as well. It is a place where you can air your views freely and work for your goals as well. To be a member all you need to be is a person who appreciates technology.
