Special Interest Group - High Performance Computing

A special interest group about 'High Performance Computing' was initiated by the SB on Thursday' 10th Jan'08. The need for High Performance in today's world was stressed in the opening by T.L.Prasanna,a final year student of CSE and ex-Chairperson,IEEE SB NITW. Goutham, a second year student of EEE shared his knowledge and ideas on his related area of interest, Quantum Computing. Several students as well our Branch counselor, Prof. DVSS Siva Sarma, became a part of the discussion which was more than an hour of new concepts in computing, limitations of the Vlsi technology and the vast pool of opportunities which lie in this domain. It was decided that the discussion would go on every Thursday at New Academic Block(NAB) and interested students should come, share and learn together.

Robotics Tutorial - 7 January 2008

A much awaited and planned event concerning robotics unleashed the IEEE string of activities for the year 2008. Thee event received an overwhelming participation from the tech-enthusiasts who wanted to know about the long & short of building one's own robot. Our Treasurer, M.Sai Krishna who is himself into robotics and has participated in several contests inside and outside the campus, took charge of the event. The presentation kicked off with the an explanation of the problem statements of the robotics event to be held in NIT Warangal's forthcoming techfest Technozion. He introduced the students to most of the mechanical parts, like the gears, motors etc. as well as the underlying circuit concepts that govern a robot's functioning, with the help of real models, pictures, videos, slides. Apart from the technical aspect, even the cost of many of the equipments was discussed which clearly rammed the popular belief that robotics was an expensive task.Students were encouraged to take steps in the direction of building robots and simple and useful tips like using tiffin boxes for the main body, pencil boxes for remotes made it sound like a child's play. The event closed with a some queries and invitation to students to participate in more and more discussions on the official robotics blog of IEEE Student Branch, NITW, www.ieeercnitw.blogspot.com.IEEE SB is planning to get new robotics equipment for the members so that they can form a robotics interest group and get started with the work.The students are requested to share their experience of the event and also give feedback for the betterment of SB's activities.

Industrial Tour to ISRO on 21/11/07

The IEEE Student Branch of NIT, Warangal organized an industrial tour to the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Sriharikota on 21^st Nov., 2007. A total of 63 student members along with Dr. D.V.S.S Siva Sarma, our branch counselor went for the trip. We took a train to get down at the nearest station, Sullurpet from where we boarded a bus to reach the SHAR Space Club, a well-furnished recreation club especially for the ISRO employees. After quick refreshment, we cruised through a smooth road flanked by the Pulicat Lake to reach the gates of ISRO. A huge expanse of greenery with the bust of Satish Dhawan at its centre, greeted us as we stopped at the Control Centre.

Our first stop was at the MAIN CONTROL CENTRE. We were shown an inspiring half hour movie about the achievements and contributions of ISRO towards the development of Indian space research. The crucial final decisions regarding a launch are made at this centre.

The rollicking mood was kept alive when we next visited the the LAUNCH PAD with its ironically named umbilical-tower surrounded with lightning diverters and closed circuit cameras. After assembly, the rocket is dragged down till the launch pad on rollers with the base called a Crawler. As we climbed up to the top of the stationary crawler, our hearts stopped for a moment as we looked down the 64-metre high construction. A clear aerial view of the entire ISRO campus could be seen from up-above with the island surrounded on one side by the Bay of Bengal and the other three by the majestic Pullicat Lake.

Gaining insight into how the organization functioned was a valuable experience for the students. Following the tour, we had our fun and frolic to get our minds away from the technical fiesta as we visited the nearby bird-sanctuary. The fascinating swans, pelicans and king-fisher birds were a treat to everyone’s eyes.

The success of the tour could not be achieved without the efforts of Mr. Pandu Ranga Rao, Scientific Officer, ISRO, and our official guide for this tour. Elections for the year 2008

The elections to select the executives of the year 2008 was held on the 30th of this month.Though the turnout was as low as 30,the enthusiasm showed by the candidates by giving long candidature speeches and by the audience by posing tough questions made the whole event interesting.There was an unanimous decision on the post of the chairman
Elections were held for the posts of Vice-Chairman,Secretary and the Treasurer.Accordingly the following people were elected as the executive committee
